Our Story
Paul Laurence Dunbar Science Olympiad est. 2018
Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is a Division C school located in Lexington, Kentucky. Dunbar has been a part of Science Olympiad since 2018. Dunbar houses the Math Science Technology Center magnet program where students gifted in the STEM field are selected through testing.
"I started it because I enjoyed doing Science Olympiad in middle school, and I remember how fun it was to hang out with team members and just study/work on fun science topics. I did Scioly for 3 years in middle school (6-8), and for 2 years in HS 11th & 12th. My favorite event was Code Busters, but I also enjoyed Write It Do It practices. Engineering events were my Achilles Heel. I'm now working towards a BS Computer Science & BA Mathematics @ Yale University.
William Ding ('20)
Hi, I’m Will, I was the Vice president of Scioly. I currently study statistics and economics at Williams College, hoping to pursue a career in data science. In hindsight, even though I didnt pursue science like most Scioly events, I learned so much about problem solving that I still use today
Christina Lummp ('21)
As Engineering team lead for PLD Scioly, I got valuable hands-on experience designing, building, and testing mechanical systems. I'm currently a Junior in Aerospace Engineering at Purdue, where I research Additively Manufactured propulsion systems. I am the Project Manager for the Purdue Space Program High Altitude Team and our goal is to take Purdue student rocketry to space! I also work as an Operations Lead in the Women in Engineering Program where I plan and host recruitment and outreach events to promote diversity in engineering.
Lohith Tummala ('21)
Hi, I'm Lohith, and I was a Dunbar Scioly captain during the 2020-21 school year. My favorite events were Codebusters and Circuit Lab. Now, I am a junior at Carnegie Mellon University majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I also help host the Carnegie Mellon Science Olympiad competition.
Saisha Dhar ('21)
Hi, I’m Saisha! I’m currently at Duke University studying Neuroscience and Global Health. I loved my SciOly experience while I was at Dunbar - it was a super fun way to grow my love for science and learn about things I wouldn’t otherwise. It showed me how to approach scientific challenges with enthusiasm!
Lyne Odhiambo ('21)
I joined Science Olympiad the first year of the club at Dunbar. I remember one of my favorite science teachers, Mrs. Newsome, was the club sponsor. My favorite event was Astronomy, and I did Dynamic Planet as well. We didn’t advance past regionals that year, but I remember getting medals and feeling like a part of a team. During my second year in Scioly and senior year at Dunbar, I was officer of the Physical Science and Chemistry events. I am currently a Physics major at MIT.

Hello! I'm currently studying at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign majoring in Math & Computer Science. I was part of the Dunbar Science Olympiad team when in high school and was co-captain during the 2021-22 school year. During my time in SciOly, I'd say my favorite event had to have been either WiFi lab or mission possible.
Sireesha Gutti ('23)
I did SciOly for all 4 years of high school and was captain during my last 2 years. I did Anatomy and Physiology, Cell Biology, Disease Detectives, Forensics, and Write It Do It at various points. Currently, I’m a neuroscience major at the University of Louisville in the Guaranteed Entrance to Medical School (GEMS) program and the Grawemeyer Scholars Program. I’m also an EMT :)
